I’ve owned the Bear II since 2016, and have used it only a handful of a times. And each time it has exceeded my expectations. I can only imagine the next generation would further exceed them.
I am currently preparing for my first Hood to Coast Relay (200 miles from Oregon’s high-point to sea level) for my first time and my ultramarathon running and crewing experience might just be my secret weapon this weekend.
I’ve prepared a Runner Stuff Kit for my wife and I in the Bear II, and with enough extras to support our van, too. It’s a comprehensive list to get our team across the finish line; covering 15+ miles each in a 36 hour period with long rests in between - a crew captains dream.
The gear and supplies that I’ve organized in the Bear II should exceed my wife and my needs - plus enough to meet the needs of up-to 3 teammates.
I’ve used this pack for a 100k and a 50 miler aid station drop bag, and it’s been exceptional. Too spacious, honestly. I could plan for EVERY need when packing my drop bag, but I only used 20-30% of it during those races, I’d say.
My wife and I discussed this becoming a first aid kit, but we’ll probably keep this as a runner kit and buy another to serve as our at-home first aid kit.
As a bit of a validator, I went to grad school for sports product management and learned so much about responsible product creation. This is one of them. You won’t need to buy another forever.
This bag looks brand new. Sure it doesn’t have a ton of mileage on it, but a few races and long runs, 7 years of getting squashed and tucked away, Don’t worry about DURABILITY.
It’s VERSATILE. When you stop running ultras like me, you can easily find another use for it: first aid, tool kit, couples lunch pale/picnic basket, car emergency kit, etc.).
And the QUALITY is so high: clean fabric cuts, quality zips, strong stitches, tough materials… strong stitches on touch materials! Phenomenal workmanship.
And it’s just so EASY. It’s simple and consistent in design, intuitive in purpose, and impeccably executed in details.
I only wish I could attach photos to this review, because so many scenarios are accounted for in this kit bag!
I’m certain our relay team will persevere this weekend! (maybe in part because we had all of the contingency plans! - Thanks Victory)
